Erschüttert durch eine TV-Dokumentation, wurde ich im Herbst 2019 auf die Verbrechen der Deutschen im Ersten Weltkrieg bei Ihrem Überfall auf das neutrale Belgien aufmerksam. Vor allem die Massaker von Leuven (Löwen) und Dinant in Flandern schockierten mich tief. Beim Suchen nach Texten aus dieser Zeit stieß ich auf das o.a. Gedicht, das der kanadische Leutnant John Alexander McCrae am 03. Mai 1915, ein Tag, nachdem sein Freund bei einem Granatenangriff in der Nähe von Ypern gefallen war, geschrieben hat. „Auf den Feldern von Flandern wehen die Mohnblumen“. Der Samen des Mohns ruht sehr lange im Boden und bleibt trotzdem keimfähig. Wird er „gestört“, fängt er zu keimen an. So geschah es auch durch das Bombardement im ersten Weltkrieg. Die rote Farbe des Mohns steht in diesem Gedicht als Sinn-Bild für das Blut der unzähligen verwundeten und getöteten Soldaten. Ebenso erinnert der Mohn an das Morphium, das aus dem Schlafmohn hergestellt wird, und mit dem die schwer verwundeten Soldaten behandelt wurden. Auch mein Urgroßvater Mathias Dimmer und sein Bruder Valentin waren Soldaten im Ersten Weltkrieg. Sie waren Werkzeuge des Krieges – und wahrscheinlich haben auch sie furchtbare Dinge gesehen und getan. Beide ließen ihr Leben in einem sinnlosen Krieg. Die Komposition „In Flanders Fields“ für Männerchor a cappella soll auf die furchtbaren Geschehnisse, die im Ersten Weltkrieg geschehen sind, aufmerksam machen.
