With version 3, the Chorilo app gets a new face. We have redesigned the interface from the ground up: calmer, clearer and with fewer buttons competing for attention at the same time. The biggest change is where it matters most, in the sheet music view. Your music now gets almost the entire screen.
One thing first: no feature has been removed. Everything the app could do before is still there, and no path has become longer. Some things simply have a new, more logical place.
The sheet music view: room for what matters
In rehearsal and on stage, only one thing counts: the music is large, steady and turns pages reliably. That is exactly what we built the sheet music view around. The tools used to sit at the top, above the music. Now they live in a slim bar along the bottom edge, within reach of your thumb and away from the title. Instead of labelled buttons you get clear icons of equal size. Active tools are highlighted, a running metronome shows a green dot, and the audio icon tells you how many recordings belong to the piece.
If you don't touch anything, the header and the tool bar fade out after a few seconds. Then the screen belongs entirely to the music. A tap in the middle of the page brings everything back. If you prefer to see the bars at all times, switch on "Always show toolbar" in the sheet music view settings. The full-screen button also hides the status bar.
Turning pages and zooming without searching
The page bar is now a slider across the full width. Every page has its own dot in it, so you can see where you are tapping. While dragging, the page number appears above your finger, which saves a lot of back and forth in long works. Tap zones at the edge of the page, swiping and Bluetooth foot pedals work as before, and the preview while turning already has the size of the finished page.
You zoom with two fingers, and a double tap switches between the normal and the enlarged view. The old zoom slider is no longer needed. If you want to keep a section in place, say only your own system, tap "Zoom" and lock it. The section then stays the same on every page and is saved, and swiping still turns the page.
Drawing with a clear header
While you draw, the header only shows "Cancel" and "Save", just like every form in the app. Pen, highlighter, eraser, text, musical symbols and jump areas sit in the bar at the bottom. Colour and stroke width open directly above it. For turning pages there is an arrow on the left and on the right, so no stroke changes the page by accident. All existing drawings and jump areas are preserved.
A home screen that shows what's coming up
The new home screen greets you by name and shows what matters right now: your next events, new notifications and your tasks, sorted into "Overdue", "Today" and "Tomorrow". If a live rehearsal is running, you can join it from here with a single tap.
You decide what goes in the bottom bar
Not everyone needs the same areas equally often. One person mostly opens sheet music, another is more interested in events and the board area. That is why the bottom bar holds Home, up to four areas of your choice and "More". Under "More › Customize bar" you pick the areas and reorder them by dragging. Everything else stays within reach under "More", including the live rehearsal. The choice applies per device, so your phone and your tablet can be arranged differently.
Events at a glance
Every event card now shows how many people have accepted and declined, and small bars show how well each voice part is covered. If you are planning, you can see right in the list whether the sopranos are strong enough for Saturday. In the event details, an overview sums up all replies, and tapping it opens the list of attendees. "Download all" for the sheet music of an event is now called "Save offline", because that describes better what happens.
Messages and profile, tidied up
In the chat list, you can mute or archive a chat with a long press, without opening it first. Chats you have already read on another device no longer show up as unread. Your profile and all settings are behind your profile picture in the top right corner. Instead of one long list, you will find clear sub-pages there, for example for appearance, notifications, security and the sheet music view.
On tablets: a sidebar and two columns
On a tablet, a sidebar on the left replaces the bar at the bottom. In landscape, list and details sit side by side, for example for events, messages, the board mailbox and your profile. In portrait, the content stays in one comfortable column. When you open sheet music, the sidebar disappears and the page fills the whole screen. In portrait, the complete page of music fits on the screen at once.
Light, dark and easy to read
Every area of the app now comes in light and dark, including the community, which used to be light only. The "System" setting now follows the device on Android as well. If you need more contrast or larger text, switch both on under Profile › Appearance, and the whole app adapts.
How to get the new version
Chorilo 3 arrives as a regular update through the App Store and Google Play. If automatic updates are switched on, you don't need to do anything. The help pages already describe the new paths in the app. The new design is also the foundation for everything that is still to come in Chorilo.
