Is WhatsApp allowed in a choir or club?
Under the GDPR, using WhatsApp for club communication is generally not privacy-compliant. The core problem: WhatsApp syncs the entire phone address book with its servers and transfers contact data to Meta in the US, including data on people who don't use WhatsApp themselves and never gave their consent. If the club or one of its officers sets up a WhatsApp group and hands out phone numbers for it, the club is responsible for that under data protection law. As a rule, there is no solid legal basis for this.
What's the data protection problem with WhatsApp?
WhatsApp processes metadata in the US and collects contact data from the phone address book without the consent of the people concerned. That is why GDPR-compliant use of WhatsApp in a club can rarely be justified. The usual alternatives are messengers such as Signal or Threema, or a dedicated club-internal solution where no private phone numbers are exchanged at all.

Why is Chorilo's own chat better for privacy?
No phone numbers
Members message each other by their name in the choir. Nobody has to give out their private mobile number or know anyone else's.
No address book syncing
Chorilo doesn't read any phone address book and doesn't pass contacts on to third parties. The very point that makes WhatsApp problematic simply doesn't apply.
Hosted in Germany
All data is stored in Germany, with German companies that have no US parent company, in line with the GDPR. Individual add-on services such as push notifications are covered by EU safeguards. A data processing agreement (DPA) is available.
Moderated
Group chats have administrators, members can be blocked and messages reported. The choir stays in control of its communication.

FAQ about WhatsApp and data protection in choirs
Is WhatsApp allowed in a club under data protection law?
Using WhatsApp for club communication is hard to reconcile with the GDPR. The main reason is the address book sync, which transfers contact data, including that of non-users, to Meta in the US without consent. As a rule, there is no solid legal basis for WhatsApp groups set up by the club.
What is the best WhatsApp alternative for choirs?
Instead of using a private messenger, your choir communicates directly in its club app with Chorilo: one-to-one chats, group chats, notifications and polls, without sharing phone numbers and without address book syncing. All data is stored in Germany in line with the GDPR, with German companies that have no US parent company.
Do members have to give their mobile number?
No. In Chorilo, members message each other by their name in the choir. Private phone numbers are neither needed nor exchanged between members.
Where is the chat data stored?
Chats are stored exclusively in Germany, with German companies that have no US parent company. With US corporations, US authorities can demand data under the CLOUD Act, even if the servers are in Europe. Processing is GDPR-compliant and a data processing agreement (DPA) is available.
Can we moderate group chats?
Yes. Group chats have administrators who manage the participants. Individual members can be blocked and inappropriate messages reported, so the choir stays in control of its communication.
