What is this?

Many children do not have their own email address. So that they are still full, active members, you create them with a family address: jonas:petra@example.com. The part before the colon is just a name; all mail arrives at petra@example.com. Jonas sees events, gets reminders, counts in lists, and Petra responds for him.

How to create a child

  1. Open Members > Add member.
  2. Enter the child's first and last name.
  3. Under "Guardian of" select the parent, for example Petra Müller. She must already be a member of the choir.
  4. The address field is prefilled with the family address, such as jonas:petra@example.com. You can adjust it.
  5. Choose voice, permission group and status as usual and save.

Jonas is now an active member, the parent link to Petra is active immediately, and Petra receives a notification.

What the parent receives

Everything Chorilo sends to Jonas arrives at Petra's address:

  • Login details and invitation
  • Reminders about open responses
  • Notifications from the choir

Petra receives this mail in addition to her own, because she is a member herself.

Why not a passive member without an address?

A member "without email" in the previous sense is a passive member: they see no events, get no reminders and cannot respond to anything, not even through their parents. For children whose parents are supposed to confirm and decline, that is useless. The family address achieves the same as a real address without the child needing a mailbox.

Their own login later

Jonas can sign in himself at any time with the family address and the login details Petra received. As soon as he has his own email address, he changes it in his profile. The link to Petra is not affected.

Requirements

  • The parent needs a real email address and must be a member of the choir. For parents who do not sing, tick Exempt from events.
  • If the parent changes their address, the children's family addresses stay unchanged. Adjust them in the children's member details then.
  • Identical first names with the same parent address automatically get a number appended.

Frequently asked questions

Is jonas:petra@example.com a real email address?
Mail to this address arrives at petra@example.com. The part before the colon is just a name so that Chorilo can tell Jonas apart from Petra.
Why not simply create Jonas as a passive member without an address?
Passive members see no events and get no reminders. For children whose parents are supposed to respond, that is useless. With the family address Jonas is a full active member.
Can Jonas use Chorilo himself later?
Yes. He signs in with the family address; Petra received the login details. As soon as he has his own address, he can change it in his profile.
Two children are both called Jonas. Does that work?
Yes. Chorilo automatically appends a number, for example jonas2:petra@example.com.
